  Friends of Ocklynge Cemetery will be represented by Kevin Gordon & Danielle Wilson to explain the work that we do.

• As part of Eastbourne’s Heritage Open Days, Chairman Kevin Gordon will give a talk at the Towner Gallery on Alderman John Towner and the Towner Bequest. He will delve into the life and legacy of Alderman John Chisholm Towner, whose bequest of 20 paintings ‘to create a gallery for the people’ started the Towner collection and the subsequent establishment of Towner Art Gallery in 1923. The talk will include a brief visit into the art store at Towner to view the paintings in the original bequest.

• Saturday 27-Sep-2025 14:00-16:00 - Chairman, Kevin Gordon will be giving a talk called ‘The Art of Death’. He will be touching on the history of burial and showing pictures of some ancient graves. He will talk about the prevalence of memento-mori in medieval times and the Victoria craze for mourning which coincided with the creation of cemeteries. Kevin will finish with examples of how death is depicted in art.

The meeting will also be an opportunity to catch up on the amazing work that has been done by the Friends of Ocklynge cemetery in the last year.
